IT "PRODUCTION" OR REALLY "REDUCTION" Most people we meet outside the music business have little or no idea what a record producer actually does. Even within the industry the level of understanding about what they do and exactly how they do it is quite hazy. A common misconception is that a record producer functions only like a home builder. A home builder is given a contract to construct a building on top of a basic and simple foundation. Record Producers fall into this stigma as well. They are hired to build a musical and commercial masterpiece on top of a basic song structure. While this is part of the responsibility of the producer, it represents only a small portion of the producer's role. We find ourselves "reducing" more than "producing." ...more
DO
YOU QUALIFY? Very few successful producers actually have any relevant qualifications. And what would a relevant qualification be? A music degree would be handy. An engineering degree from one of the new audio schools would not go amiss. For that matter, neither would a psychology degree. Personally, we have both music and engineering degrees and we value their importance to the total package that God is molding us into. We don't want to minimize the importance of education, but we want to emphasize other qualifications that we feel are just as important to the production process...more
